Siobhan O’Brien
Dubbed “a voice the world should hear” by Paddy Moloney (The Chieftains), Siobhán O’Brien is writing music for the risk takers of this world. Certainly a woman who made the trek from Ireland to America, with only two suitcases in hand, to be a full-time songwriter knows a thing or two about risk.
It’s a common narrative for songwriters to chronicle their journey towards self-discovery but O’Brien does it in a manner that is so relatable, it’s as if she wrote these songs for you alone. Perhaps it’s the exquisite tension in her voice, the authenticity in her lyrics, or the magnetic presence on stage that garnered a generation of admirers ranging from Bob Dylan to Leonard Cohen but the folk-rock songwriter has only just begun to tell her story.
You've decided to join the fight and speak up for Julian in an industry where many may find it expedient to keep silent. What do you think formed your political perspective and activation?
I've decided to be associated with Julian's campaign because I know what it feels like to be silenced. I believe in the power of the people and I've always had a sense of the world being very unjust. As a musician I've felt very much outside the box always and i never knew why. In recent years the world has been exposed to the corruption that has been going on in the underbelly , in the shadows and it all made sense then why what would seem to be the right thing to do was never done by our politicians. This uncovering of lies started with Wikileaks.
How did you come to care about this cause?
I've always cared about this cause ever since Wikileaks had so much to do with the cause of justice and uncovering corruption at the highest levels. It is galling the serious violations of human rights and civil liberties that are ignored because of corruption. Everything bad in the world started with a lie.
And what's the most important thing you'd like people to understand about Julian's case?
That Julian's case is bigger than petty in fighting about whether he broke the law or not. It is an opportunity for people to get behind and be the change our world so badly needs. Imagine living in a world where you could trust the governments and Judicial systems that the truth would come out regardless of class or rank or influence.
