Ben Mitchell is an Australian singer-songwriter and freedom activist writing songs with blues, country, folk and indie-pop influences. His love of song writing and a deeply held passion for freedom of expression have been the catalyst for a cascade of songs and albums with freedom as the overriding theme. Released as a stand alone single in 2019, and perhaps Mitchell’s most political song to date, ‘Right To Know’ is Mitchell’s call to arms for the good people of all countries to demand the right to know what governments are up to, supposedly, on their behalf.
You've decided to join the fight and speak up for Julian in an industry where many may find it expedient to keep silent. What do you think formed your political perspective and activation?
I never considered myself particularly ‘political’ but as an artist, a songwriter especially, I value freedom of expression as a basic right of life. My personal activation to speak, write and sing publicly about the dangers of censorship and the importance of having a balanced media kicked off when I learned about farmers in Australia, and around the world, struggling to survive while much needed water they rely on was being sold off to private corporations. I wrote ‘Right To Know’ about that situation and other similar situations which don’t get covered in the press but deeply effect everyone.
How did you come to care about this cause?
Watching what happened to Julian, regarding his unlawful imprisonment for doing his job as a journalist, and sharing factual information, was, and is, very alarming to me. Speaking up against tyrannical rule, despite the risks as exemplified by Julian’s situation, came naturally to me, being a father who wants to do whatever I can to create a better, more just world for my children and all the children of the world.
What's the most important thing you’d like people to understand about Julian's case?
That he represents any of us who value the truth, and that by standing beside him we stand for our right to speak freely, share information freely and, ultimately, live freely. His case marks a turning point in history and we the people have an opportunity, perhaps even duty, to stand together, and beside Julian, for freedom.
