Gabriel Moreno is Gibraltarian singer-songwriter, currently based in London. An irresistibly engaging performer, he combines a Latin exuberance and passion with a rare lyrical calibre (he is also a published poet, with 12 books in Spanish and English).
The cell (for Julian Assange)
When the only hummingbirds you see
are gandering in your skull,
when shutters fall upon your tongue
like steel dams upon the water,
when plastic forks and carton spoons
are your only lunchtime friends,
when the rust in your temporal bones
has spread on to your thinking,
when the warbles and chirps of friends
are muted by troglodytes,
when the antenna of the western world
is pointing to a golden noose …
Do not despair, listen to the singing,
a shimmer of partisans and bards
is marching past your cell.
You've decided to join the fight and speak up for Julian in an industry where many may find it expedient to keep silent. What do you think formed your political perspective and activation?
I was astounded to see no one in the music industry speak up for Julian and the inherent injustice perpetrated against his person. I spoke to a couple of younger musicians who did not even know he was imprisoned. They thought he lived happily in Sweden. I was shocked! It seemed as if the mainstream media had been successful in bending the narrative. I was moved to add my grain of sand.
How did you come to care about this cause?
I have been ostracised in my profession for trying to bring some aspects of modern life into question. It seems we are punished for being truthful. I came across Julian’s situation in 2011 when I was living in Chile, a country which has suffered its own strand of political oppression. I was amazed and proud that someone had wanted to reveal the nasty truth behind US army tactics and shocked with the persecution that followed. I realised that tyranny is still very much enforced through back channels and deals.
What's the most important thing you’d like people to understand about Julian's case?
The most important thing I would like to highlight about Julian’s case is that this hell could happen to any of us and his ordeal is the ordeal of anyone who wants insight into the truth behind the system. Also, I would like to mention that art has an important part to play in the resistance. I thank Julian's team for allowing me to be part of the resistance.

I popped onto Bandcamp. His song title 'No One Knows Where You Are' is appropriate to one of his answers.
