James Kennedy is a rock musician, author of the #1 best selling book 'Noise Damage' and host of the James Kennedy Podcast - a weekly show where he chats with activists, academics, rock stars & politicians about the issues of our times. His latest album is 'Make Anger Great Again' which he is currently touring with his band 'James Kennedy and the Underdogs'.
You're politically outspoken in an industry where many may find it expedient to keep silent. What do you think formed your political perspective & activation?
I was raised in a very political house-hold with parents who both had a strong contempt for all forms of injustice and corruption. I was encouraged to read, think for myself and ask questions from a very young age and by my teens I was deeply immersed in the writings of Orwell, Chomsky, Pilger, Huxley and Tony Benn. So it has always seemed perfectly natural and uncontroversial to me to mix politics with my music and I have been doing so since my first album came out in 2002. Artists are supposed to be the mirror to society, we're supposed to be the dreamers of a better way, we're supposed to challenge conformity and power. Aren't we?
How did you come to care about this cause?
I remember very clearly when the Collateral Murder video came out and it changed everything. I had been eagerly following the work of Julian and Wikileaks for some time already and I felt that what they were doing was an essential democratic duty and a genuine journalistic challenge to power - something we desperately needed. I still believe all of those things to be true and we need them more now than ever. I have been a passionate and vocal supporter of this cause since day one as it sets a disturbing precedent - once they start imprisoning journalists, we no longer live in a democracy.
What's the most important thing you'd like people to understand about Julian's case?
It's not just about Julian's personal fight for freedom, it's about all of our fight for a true democracy, a free press and a world where our leaders can be held accountable for the actions taken in our name. If you believe in free speech, if you believe in democracy, if you believe in justice - regardless of your politics - you have to support the release of Julian Assange. Or else where will it end? Will you be next? The freedom of the press to inform the electorate and challenge power is an absolute and it is down to all of us to protect it - lose it at your peril.

What an incredible performance! We all need to raise our voices so loud that the powers that stand against Julian cannot ignore us and set him free. He is not alone in this struggle but Freedom of the Press and the very concept of dissent stand with him
